Metabolism is the amount of energy (calories) your body burns to maintain itself. Whether you are eating, drinking, sleeping, cleaning, or exercising, your body is constantly burning calories to keep you going. Let's review six tips for increasing your metabolism to help you burn off more fat on a daily basis.
There aren't any diets on the market that can keep you thin and attractive for life. Most diets that arrive on the market are fads and instead of giving you the perfect results you are looking for, they leave you frustrated and hopeless. Well, put your worries aside, here are 6 effective tips for a healthier you!
- Getting enough sleep. According to the studies people who don't get enough sleep are usually more apt to be overweight and have a slower metabolism. People tend to confuse hunger with being tired, which leads to obesity. You must get at least 8 hours of sleep a night. You must have enough sleep that you wake up feeling revived and refreshed in the morning. Imagine, sleeping helps you lose weight!
- Eat breakfast!
Breakfast is essential. Your body has been deprived of food throughout the night; therefore your metabolism has slowed. If your cells do not receive sufficient nutrients they will begin to function less efficiently on smaller amounts and this will actually store more fat to use during these times of nutritional deprivation. You must eat to lose weight efficiently.
- Drink your water!
For the average person experts suggest getting at least 64 ounces of water daily or eight 8-ounce glasses. If you are on a diet to lose weight it is more important to consume more and keep drinking water throughout the day, unless you have any medical condition that doesn't allow much water intake. A good guide for daily intake is to drink 1 ounce of water for every 2 pounds of body weight. A 200 pound person should be drinking around 100 ounces (12.5 cups) of water in order the gain the benefits of increased energy and metabolism.
- Eat fewer high-fat foods and less total calories. Choosing healthy foods, such as lean protein and vegetables, can actually increase your metabolism as well. Increase dietary fiber and limit sugary foods, alcohol, caffeine and don't smoke. The best foods to increase your metabolism and help you lose weight are fish, dark green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, blueberries and other fruits, whole grains.
- Skipping meals is like skipping life. Eating increases metabolism due to the energy required for digestion and absorption of the food. Skipping meals causes a decrease in your metabolic rate until you eat something. Skipping breakfast and lunch and eating a large dinner means missing out on two important chances to increase your metabolism and boost the number of calories you burn.
- Exercise increases metabolic rate in two ways. The first is the actual number of calories you burn while doing the exercise. For example, a 5-mile run might burn 500 calories during the time you are actually running. A second elevation in metabolic rate occurs even after you have stopped exercising. Your metabolic rate could take as long as 12 or more hours to come back to your normal level after exercise. Higher intensity exercises that use large muscle groups such as your thighs and buttocks will result in a longer elevation in metabolism after you stop exercising.
