Cardio and Weights

Did you ever stop to realize that you can be healthy and not physically fit?  The reverse is also true; you can be physically fit but yet not be healthy.

A heart lifting weights to become physically fit and healthy.

As you travel down the meandering path of your weightloss journey you will no doubt stumble onto the debate of which is the better exercise, cardio or weights?  The easiest way to answer this is to start by redefining the question.  Chances are you are not here to learn how to become the next Mr. Atlas or compete in the Boston marathon.   The reason you are reading this is because you want to lose weight.   The question should read as follows: What is the best use of time for you to achieve your weight loss goals?

Which type of exercise (cardio or weights) is the best type of exercise to lose weight?

Now that we have defined the question let us take it one step further and discover what it means to be physically fit.  To truly understand the destination of your weight loss journey you must understand what fitness means. Let’s think of fitness as a state of well being consisting of optimum levels of strength, flexibility, weight control, cardiovascular capacity, and positive mental and physical health behaviors that prepare us to participate fully in life.

You cannot seek true weight loss without pursuing a fit lifestyle.  Crash diets hurt your fitness.  Lack of exercise hampers your weight loss and also inhibits your fitness level.  So as you decide whether to do cardio or weights remember that the initial goal must be to lose weight.    As your journey continues you must contribute to that weightloss through diet and exercise. There really is a need to do both types of exercise in your weight loss journey.  You need to be prepared to do both because as you lose the weight you will discover weightloss is not about food deprivation.  You will learn weight loss is also about mental education that stimulates you into a state of mind that allows you to understand that being fit is an encompassing lifestyle change.  Being fit is what will allow your “diet” to become a weightloss journey.  Being fit will come by losing the weight and early on the best way for weightloss is to do more cardio and less weight training.  As you get further down the weight loss trail you will need to increase weight training… but I get ahead of myself.
