Choosing The Right Exercise

A women walking around a fitness track. The type of exercise that you want to do really depends on you and what you enjoy doing. It also depends on your dislikes or if you are going to go to a gym or fitness center or if you intend on buying some kind of fitness equipment. These are all the things you need to consider while you are deciding.

If you choose something that you don't like to do, you aren't going to keep doing it. Give it some thought; if you don't like to jog then you aren't going to get up at 6 in the morning to run. If you can't find something you like to do, then choose something you dislike the least. Walking is a great starting point.

Walking is a wonderful exercise, it suits all levels of fitness. Anyone can start a walking program at anytime. Walking can also be a social exercise, it isn't difficult to find a training partner to chat with while you exercise. Walking with a partner has several healthy benefits like accountability, friendship and someone to push you just a little bit further.

No matter what you choose, you should start at a low level of intensity and build up over a period of time, which is essential to building up your lean body mass and your aerobic capabilities. If you start off at a high intensity you are more prone to injuries, sore muscles and failure.

If you are just beginning an exercise program, you should start off by walking for at least 10 minutes a day. Walk one way for 5 minutes and turn around and walk 5 minutes home. You should increase it by 5 minutes every two weeks. To make your walks fun and interesting, try walking different paths, carry a camera or walk with a different friend each day of the week.

If walking isn't something you enjoy, then you may want to try a fitness center. This can add variety to your workout and they should have specialized trainers there to answer any questions that you may have. When choosing a fitness center, check for cleanliness, ask about trainers and their certifications, talk to people that go to the center to see if they like it and then decide for you.You should also make sure the equipment they use is well taken care of. It is easy to find out; all you have to do is listen to the machines. If they squeak a lot or make noise then chances are they aren't maintained. Don't let anyone pressure you into buying a membership; it is still your decision. You do not have to decide on your first visit.

If you still aren't sure which exercise to add into your life, then maybe you should look into golf or tennis. Both are good social activities in most areas, and you can even meet some new friends. Tennis is great for fitness although it isn't for someone who is just starting out on an exercise program. If you haven't exercised in a long time, then golf may be the best sports activity for you. Plan on not using the golf cart, walking is what you need.

The choice is really yours. You are the only one that can decide your likes and dislikes. As for me, I go to a fitness center. It keeps me accountable and there are trainers there that can help me with the machines. I love riding the exercise bike and working out on the weight machines. It makes me feel wonderful. Do what makes you happy but make sure that it is also helping you get healthy and fit.
