Depression can be one of the most crippling experiences in life. It makes you tired, so tired you just want to stay in bed and never get up. It can be like a huge black hole that you never want to crawl out of. If you are feeling like this at all you should by all means see your doctor, this should be the first step in learning how to deal with depression. There are other ways of dealing with depression and one of them is exercise. It is one of the best and healthiest ways of dealing with depression.
People seem to experience depression more now than ever. It is treatable through medicines, therapy and other self help options. Exercise should be one of those self help options. Research studies have shown that exercise treats depression because it:
- Increases your self esteem
- Helps you forget some of your worries by distracting your thoughts
- Improves your body
- Lifts your spirits
- Helps relieve stress
- Improves your sleeping quality
- Helps you feel in more control over your thoughts and moods
Even if it feels impossible to get up and get moving, it is exactly what you need to do. No matter how hard it is to get up and get moving, you need to at least try. You'll immediately see that moving will improve your mood and help with the stress that you are facing in your life.
Keeping it simple!
The problem with depression is that you feel that all of your energy has been drained, that there is no life force left in you. Even getting out of bed is a great effort, so exercising can seem like a bad dream when you are depressed. No matter what your mind is telling you, exercise is a good thing. If you can take some simple steps and add a little activity into your day it will improve your mood and help you work through your depression.
- Set simple goals. Set a goal to just get up and get dressed. Take a walk around the block or around your house or your living area. Promise yourself that you will take that walk at least three times that day. The next day, do a little more, make improvements daily.
- Take it easy on yourself. If you can't handle a lot of exercise, feel good about what you are able to do. Now is not the time to kick yourself when you are trying to get up.
- Do what you like. If walking feels good to you, then walk a little ways. If you like yoga, then do some of your favorite poses. If you like to dance, then turn on some music and dance. Even if you are telling yourself that you are not enjoying this right now, you will eventually.
- Ask a friend to join you. Talking to people when you are depressed raises your energy and reminds you that you are not alone. So why not ask someone to go for a walk with you.
- Get some fresh air. A little sunshine always raises your mood even if it is a little. Go outside, feel the fresh air, remind yourself of the world around you and let yourself know that you can participate in it as much as you can possibly handle.
- Find a doctor what will help you work through your depression. Talk to your doctor about treatment options and exercise. They might be able to set you up with an exercise physical trainer that will help you succeed in helping control your depression.
Whatever you do, never give up on life. You are never alone and you aren't fated to feel this way forever. Try to participate in life as much as possible, even if it feels like it is something you cannot do. Sometimes you have to do what is right for you and wait until later for it to feel right. Exercise can be a huge help with your moods and your self worth. Your sense of accomplishment can add a new spark to your day, something that you can be proud of and feel good about.
