Metabolism

Are you having a tough time jumping up just to let those jeans fit over your thighs? Before your children, spouse or room mate complains about the mild earthquakes you are creating, think of doing your part by making an effort to live a healthier lifestyle. It doesn't mean that you have to starve yourself to lose weight; it means you have to learn to control your portions and exercise.

Weight loss is as confusing as going to a new supermarket and buying your groceries. Everything is stocked in different parts of the store and it just boggles your mind. When shopping in a new supermarket you don't have control over where the store manager decides to stock the food but you do have control of your weight. Did you know that it is about knowing your metabolism and how to calculate your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR).

What is RMR?

Your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is the rate at which you burn energy or calories at rest.

There are factors that affect our RMR. One of these is our age. As we become older, our muscles deteriorate and it leads to lower RMR. As a result, we gain weight as we grow older.

Dieting and exercise is no guarantee that one can effectively lose weight. We can have short term effects only, but what about the long term effects? We know for a fact that the long term effects are more important to us than the short term ones. When losing weight make sure you are eating right not just on a low fat/low calorie diet, if not your metabolism will slow down and your body will feed off of your muscle mass instead of your fat. Muscles are essential for your metabolism, so you get long term results from weight loss. Exercise your whole body, do some cardio with weight training.

As you take steps to increase your RMR, you are pushing yourself on your way to a lighter weight and a healthier life as a whole.
