My Spouse Weigh Over 1200 Pounds

Okay, so my spouse is not over 1200 pounds but if you add the weight of my small family, then it is well over 1200 pounds.  The point is that if a person is overweight then the selection of food at home is part of the problem.  If you are overweight and are preparing food for others who are not concerned with obesity then you have a serious problem that is compounded by how many people you have living in your home.  It is similar to trying to quit smoking in a room filled with people who smoke.

You have heard of the story about not being able to water a horse if a horse is lead to water and does not want to drink?  The same applies to a family or just a spouse if only one person is overweight.  If you are trying to change your life style to one that will allow you to lose weight, then the bulk of your problems may be at your own doorstep.   If your spouse is overweight and chooses to not make a change, then how can you help them change? How can you get them to want to join you on your weight loss journey?  Chances are that if you can it will not be easy.  A person needs to make that individual choice and until they make that choice they will only be sneaking the fries and the stashing the burger wraps.  More often than not the spouse will make a life changing diet decision only after a heart attack or after they learn they are diabetic.   So, if you decide to change your lifestyle and you know your family is resistant then you will be more successful with a sneak attack.  As you wander the aisles at the grocery store do not just go on the mad dash of the preplanned journey from habitual choice to habitual choice.  There are many selections you can make that can slow down the approaching health crisis without the kindred even knowing.  Start to substitute low fat or no fat products in cheese and sour cream and milk.  There are many things you can improve upon that you throw into the bowl during the preparation of a meal.  Many your family would never notice.

Another way to improve upon family health is by just not bringing it into your home.  Look at the ingredients of your choices and no longer stock up on two dozen frozen pizzas.  Do not reduce your weight drastically but instead do it slowly over a few weeks or months.  In the beginning you need to start introducing healthy items into the home.  Leave fruit available and grapes in the fridge and never complain when they are eaten quickly.  You will be amazed that if you have a gallon of iced tea available in the refrigerator your children will choose it over the coke©. Sweeten your ice tea with Splenda instead of sugar.   Sit down with a bowl of ripe cantaloupe and start eating it and when your family asks for a piece, watch the gasps of enjoyment when the flavor explodes in their mouth. The theory is alternate choices and not deprivation.

The point is that you can not lose weight in a vacuum while the others around your home are scarfing the pizza and the cheeseburgers.  You can’t force them to diet because it just will not work as a matter of fact.  You need to educate your loved ones and that can be done by simple introduction.  Do not deprive, just substitute.  Do not completely cut off the pizza or the ice cream, just make it less common.

While you are introducing the new food choices then you need to get them off the couch.  No you do not have to blow the whistle a 5 AM; you just need to make subtle changes.  Park further away when at the mall.  Walk more at the mall.  Go to the beach or the lake.  There are so many ways to introduce minor exercise into the life of those around you.  Let us not forget the purpose of all this is to change the diet and habits of your loved ones in very subtle ways.  This will not only prolong their life it will prolong your life too.  This will make your weight loss journey that much more bearable.  By bringing your loved ones into the synchronization of what you are doing will help make what you are doing that much easier.   This is one way that will help prevent the kicking and dragging of all the feet in the family.
