Over the Counter Pills for Weight Loss

Picture of Diet Power CD-ROMSeveral people spend hundreds and even thousands of dollars yearly on weight loss supplements in the hopes of speeding up their metabolism. In American, more than sixty percent of adults are overweight and thirty percent are obese and the percentages are rising. Recent studies have also shown that children starting in grade school right up through high school are gaining weight and the percentages are alarming.

There are many factors that have contributed to this, such as the rise of fast food restaurants that contain high amounts of saturated fats in their meals, the use of refined sugar in soda's, processed foods that are hitting the markets, not enough fiber, genetics, overeating and as people age their metabolism slows. Since losing weight takes time and most people aren't patient, they decide to take the quick fix, which is through the use of weight loss pills.

In the 1950's until about the late 90's, doctors prescribed drugs for weight loss. These drugs work by increasing the serotonin levels in the brain which tricks the stomach into believing that it is full., which increases the persons metabolic rate.

While Over-the-Counter diet pills are categorized as food substitute and are unregulated. Beware that these diet pills are not FDA tested and approved and may cause serious side effects up to and including death.

Aside from a dietician, local pharmacists can also help in determining the pills if they safe or not. They do not consider each individual's case. Be careful about the so called natural or organic ingredients. Not everything that comes from a natural source is considered safe. An example is Ma Huang, which is a botanical source of ephedrine known as a stimulant and is being studied for potential side effects.

Those who have a family history of prostate problems, thyroid disease, mental illness, high blood pressure and heart problems should avoid taking diet pills. The same applies to those who have had seizures or strokes. If someone is taking cold medicines, especially the ones with decongestants, diet pills should not be taken.
