Long Term Weight Loss

Phase III: Secret to Weight Loss

The time has come and now you are ready to make the change!  You have spent too much money and have devoted too much time on “diets” that did nothing more than cause you to gain even more weight, in the long run.  Now is the time you are going to put away all those notions of weight loss diet pills and fad diets.  Now is the time to take stock of your life and start fresh.

Your diet does not start in the kitchen.
I want you to start in a place where you would least expect.  This is a secret I have learned and it has been invaluable to many who have tried again and again to shed the pounds and help create the chiseled body you have always wanted.  The mind is where the real battle of weightloss occurs.   Wherever your mind decides to go is where your body will follow.  You need to help your mind by eliminating all the negative energy sources.  I want you to start your diet in your closet. The closet I refer to is where you store your clothing.  You must eliminate all of the negative thoughts you create when you open your closet and your chest of drawers.  You may think that you see clothing that your goal is to fit into one day.  What you are really doing is creating and continuing a thought process of failure.  You are looking at clothing that is too small for you and that is generating negative energy.  You may not think it does but as you look at your clothing you see failure and this is not the thought process you need,  After you see all of your ill fitting clothing removed it will physically alter the surroundings and your mind will see the change each and every time you enter the closet or open a drawer.  Your brain will register that you have changed your environment and it will encourage your inner being to accept this change which will in turn convince your body to follow suit.  I helped a friend of mine do this and we hauled off, to charity, seven large garbage bags of clothing.   She thought I was crazy, but the process became very exciting.  The seven pairs of jeans that did not fit…..gone.  The twenty seven tight shirts…..gone.  The belts that hung in the corner…..gone.  The underwear, suit coats and slacks all ended up at the charity of choice.  When the removal was completed the closet and drawers were barren.  Reality proved that the majority of clothing did not fit and those that did fit were scarce in comparison to the total space of the closet.  Now every time that closet was looked upon the stark reality of the impending lifestyle change was in her face.  The reality was there and it was unavoidable.  The reward for losing the weight was the shopping trips to buy new clothing and the process of reward is more tangible when you have to buy new instead of wearing old.  The first time my friend walked into a store and started the search for smaller sizes the feeling was pure emotional ecstasy.

Lets look in the kitchen.
Now that you have eliminated the excess clothing you need to clear out the refrigerator and pantry.  You know what belongs there and what needs to go.  If you have a family that loves you they should support you as long as you do not inflict your new lifestyle upon them as if they were just drafted.  How you approach this removal of “bad” foods will depend upon your living situation.  The best case scenario is the total removal of offending foods but you do not want to discard your roommate’s food.  You do not want to upset a spouse who does not want to or maybe does not need to change.   You do not want to become the food dictator because this just adds to your own personal pressure.  You must accept the fact that if a person does not have the inner urge to lose weight by changing their lifestyle, you can’t force them to make the change.  A sad twist to this is that almost always a non Chefs Diet - Real Foodparticipating overweight person would rather see you fail on your diet change because then they can then rationalize why they can remain over weight.
As you purge your food source of unwanted items you must realize you are not setting yourself up for a future of food deprivation.  You are merely changing your lifestyle and will only eat that which benefits your being.  This does not mean an existence of twigs and grass.  You will soon learn the food you eat is not only good, it is healthy.  At the time of this article I went out last night at a fine steak house and ate like a king.  I do not do this often, but when I do go out and occasionally disregard my lifestyle it doesn’t spell the end of my weight loss progression.  I gained .6 pounds, but I ate steak and potatoes and fried shrimp and my favorite…french onion soup, and let’s not forget the black bread with real butter.  The point is that as you purge your kitchen of the “junk” you are not saying goodbye forever.  What you purge and what you save will be based upon what you will need to prepare your meals.  You will soon learn that if you use mayonnaise then you start purchasing the low or reduced fat brands.  Start getting the fat free salad dressings and the fat free sour cream.  If you think they do not have flavor and zest then you will soon realize how wrong you have been.  Please refer to the meal portion of this website for other great tips and meals that won’t just go to your waist or add to your already blooming buttocks.  The removal of unneeded junk foods is another event in the preparation of your mind to convince your body there is a change in lifestyle coming.

You have decided to not be the 300,001st person?
You need to learn to eat a variety of foods.  Give up the fried food and opt for baking, broiling and steaming.  Start to choose food that is low in saturated fat and cholesterol to reduce your total calories and quickly lower your health risks.  Choose high fiber foods that digest slower and help offset hunger.  Realize that alcohol contains nothing but empty calories.  Start to love to drink water.  Your body needs it to survive.   Realize that when you eat out the restaurants do not care if you are healthy or have a stroke.  The owners just want to extract the money from your wallet or purse.  If you can’t get healthy foods at lunch then spend the needed time the night before preparing a great lunch of food you enjoy.  Start looking at the content of what you are swallowing and educate yourself as to what is good.  You will learn over time and you will change to a healthier lifestyle.  Either you look out for yourself and learn or you will die young.  If you do not lose the weight you may be part of the 300,000 people who die from being overweight this year.  If you survive this year then you move up on the list for next year.  This may seem harsh but it is the truth.  Accept the need for change or realize you are closer to death than you need to be at this time in your life.

Now you are ready to learn the key secret to weight loss.  This is the answer for all healthy people to lose weight; there are no exceptions to this rule.  There are no pills for it and there is no magic wand that you can wave and become thin.  The key to losing weight is quite simple.  You must burn more calories than you consume.  That is it that is the answer.  There is no more and there is no less.  If you want to lose weight you must provide your body with a combination of food consumption and exercise that will allow your body to draw upon existing fat to produce the energy to survive.  You must force your body to draw upon the reserves (fat) to generate the needed energy to get you through the day.  A good healthy diet is not one of deprivation it is one of conscious choices that make up a healthy lifestyle.

Forget about dieting.  Weight management is a permanent change in your lifestyle. Your new attitude and behaviors will not end when you obtain your desired weight.  You need to realize that inches are more important than pounds and that the pounds you lose are best lost gradually over a long period of time.  One to two pounds a week is a great goal that any healthy person should be able to obtain.  You did not put on those extra one hundred pounds in a month and it will take longer than a month to shed those pounds.

You are now ready to begin losing the weight and the inches.  You are now ready to be able to say “I Choose Thin!”
