Sometimes, the battle is lost long before you even open the door. Know what you are getting into so you are not surprised by your menu choices or forced to choose between the two deep fried fatty monsters. All it takes is a few minutes in your house, on your computer. Preparation will save you hours of working out at the fitness club or elliptical.
- Find the restaurant's web site to see there menu. Study it. You can copy it off and take it to the restaurant.
- Decide on what you are eating before you even leave your house. Are you craving chicken, pasta or a nice salad? If it is possible, choose a specific item on the menu so that you are not tempted when you are at the restaurant.
- Make reservations if possible. This will cut down on the waiting and hunger time at the restaurant. If you like to have a drink before eating, it will cut down on the drinks at the bar while waiting for a table.
- While you're making the reservations, ask about their preparation methods and their ability to accommodate your requests. Learn your options and what your healthy choices are.
- Reserve a table away from the kitchen so that all the food is not paraded by you as you are ordering.
- Know what your budget is and what you can afford to eat. If you starve yourself you are only setting yourself up for temptations and your diet will go south.
- Don't leave your house hungry. Have a small healthy snack like an apple or a small salad a couple hours before eating to avoid munching before your meal.
- Bring along some whole wheat or rye crackers and maybe some packets of your favorite low fat dressing for your salad. You can't always count on the restaurant to have the things that you like. I have to carry Splenda with me because not all restaurants carry it.
