Definition of Obesity

definiton of obesityThe definition of obesity is where excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effects on your health. This usually reduces your life expectancy, and increases your chance for developing some serious health issues.

Obesity has become an epidemic, and is out of control, and is sweeping the world, not just the United States. Levels of obesity are at there all time high, and getting worse as you read this article.

We have to realize that obesity shouldn't be taken lightly; that we should seek medical attention to help us in our efforts to lose weight. Obesity is culprit for many deaths that are happening right now.

Most of us tend to assume that obesity is just being very overweight. The health community describes "overweight" as an excess amount of body weight which includes:

Obesity is defined by the excess of body fat.

There are some that can be considered overweight such as body builders who have tons of muscles, and athletes, but they are not obese.

Obesity Health Issues

Obesity brings a whole lot of health issues to the table such as diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, stroke, and the list just keeps growing. Some feel that obesity is just a cosmetic problem, they are wrong it is a health risk that can cause death.

Obesity is also linked to certain types of cancer. Obese men are more likely to die from cancer of the colon, rectum, or prostate. Obese women are more likely to die from cancer of the gallbladder, breast, uterus, cervix, or ovaries.

Can Illnesses Lead to Obesity?

Some illnesses lead to obesity or weight gain. Your doctor can tell you whether you have a medical condition that is causing you to gain weight, or making weight loss difficult. This is not just a disclaimer we have written, it is the truth. If you really desire to lose weight, that journey should begin with a visit to a doctor who can guide you on your journey and track your progress.

Obesity and Society

The most agonizing parts of being obese is the emotional suffering. In our society, we tend to judge people by their physical appearance. We confuse beauty with being thin, especially when it comes to women.

These kinds of messages make obese people feel unattractive, and hard for them to maintain their dignity and self esteem. Low self esteem makes it even harder for a person to be able to lose weight. It is a viscous cycle that ends up being deadly for so many people who are seeking their path to health and wellness.

Many think that the obese are lazy, gluttonous, or both and it makes me sad to see us act this way when we know this is far from the truth. Obese people often face discrimination in every aspect of their life.

Depression, rejection, loneliness, or shame are common feelings of the obese. Obese people are just like everyone else, and should be treated with respect. A jolly obese person more often that not is suffering an internal battle, that is merely masked, and hidden by their laughter.

In Conclusion

Our environment, and society strongly influences obesity. This includes lifestyle behaviors as to what a person eats, and their level of activity. We prefer high-fat foods, and we put the taste of food, and convenience of fast food ahead of eating healthy.

We cannot change our genes, but we can make a change on what we put into our mouths. We can learn to cook more nutritious meals, which are lower in fat. We can learn to recognize if we are hungry or full by slowing down our eating. We can also incorporate exercise into our lives.

This old statement has been floating around for years, but I find it to be true. It goes as follows, we should eat to live, and not live to eat.

So, to sum up the definition of obesity is to say we have to much fat on our bodies. Only you can do something about it, and only you can control what goes in your mouth. Only you have control on making time to exercise if you are obese. It just takes one step at a time. You can only eat an elephant one bite at a time, even if it is a little one. Getting healthy takes the same dedication which is one step at a time. Good luck in your weight loss journey.
