5 Fantastic Diet Plateau Tips

When you first start a weight loss program, the weight seems to come off fairly quickly. This is a great motivator to help you reach your weight loss goals. Then after awhile your diet routine begins to get a little boring, and then WHAM you hit the diet plateau wall. You have been eating foods on your plan so calories haven't changed, and you have still been exercising. So what happened? Your weight just won't bulge. This is the time to re-evaluate your eating plan, and your exercise.

Is my weight loss goal too low? If you hit your diet plateau when you are near your goal weight, then maybe your body is telling you enough. Some people want to weigh what they did in high school, or some other happy time in their life, but maybe this isn't really a realistic goal at this stage of your life. If you are only 5 to 10 pounds from reaching your goal then stop. Maintain the weight that you have lost for a month, and then re-evaluate your weight loss goal.

Diet Plateau Tips to Help You Get Started Again

  1. Are you over eating, and taking in too many calories? Remember that after you have lost some weight you have to re-evaluate your caloric intake because you will need less when you are smaller. Adjust your caloric intake, and see if that gets the pounds to come off. Always keep some attention focused on the fact that your metabolism is out there, and needs to be considered whenever trying to adjust ones's caloric intake to affect one's weight.
  2. Keep a journal of everything that you eat. This is a good idea for any weight loss plan. It is really important when you hit a diet plateau . When you write everything down, and you review it, you might find you are taking in more calories that you thought.
  3. Are you eating enough? If you are not getting enough to eat then your body will go into starvation mode. Your body will actually try to conserve your body weight, your weight loss will come to a screeching halt, and this will cause a diet plateau. If you think that you are not getting enough calories then try adding some calories everyday to see if that will quick start you back into losing weight again.
  4. Exercise more! If you have been exercising, then try to increase the time you spend exercising a little bit more each day. If you don't have the time to exercise more then pump it up. Increase your weights, or resistance. Start a new exercise. If you are not exercising, not is a good time to start. Exercise and eating right is the best combination to lose weight, reach your goals, and live a long and healthy lifestyle.
  5. Measure everything! I know that after awhile measuring gets to be boring, and you tempt fate, and tell yourself that you know portion sizes by sight. Don't take a chance, because if you are not measuring everything, chances are you are eating more that you think. Measuring your food is important because then you know exactly what you are putting into your mouth.

Losing the last 20 pounds should not be looked at as an obstacle. You need to look back, and be happy with the weight that you have lost. A diet plateau should only be a minor bump in the road. Losing the last 20 pounds is really the transition that needs to take place from weight loss to weight maintenance. Weight Loss is not a speed race, it is a marathon, and it is one that is too important to let the last 20 pounds beat you. Keep pushing, and trying, and never give up.
