What is Spinning?

Have you ever asked, "what is spinning"? Spinning is an aerobic exercise that takes place on a specially designed bike called a spinning bike. This type of exercise uses visualizations and music.

When attending a spin class your instructor will encourage you to visualize being outdoors riding a regular bicycle. Your instructor will create a mood by playing certain music, and giving you prompts that suggests you are outside.

For example: Your instructor may tell you that you are headed up a very steep hill, and to keep pedaling. They will instruct you to not give up and when you have almost reached the top.

The pace will change throughout the class like standing, and pedaling at the same time, changing the tension on the bike, or pedaling as fast as you can.

This can be a very interesting class for those who love to cycle, but don't have the time, or a place to go.

History of Spinning

Spinning was created by the world class cyclist, John G. Goldberg. In 1989, John G. Goldberg and John Baudhyin went in together, and opened the first spinning center in Santa Monica, California. The rest is history!

Burning Calories

Spinning definitely burns calories. Some say it will burn around 450, and others say between 400 and 600, but it depends on how you ride the bike. Spinning offers a fantastic aerobic workout that makes your heart pump fast. It tones your front and outer thigh muscles.

You are in control of the pace even while following your instructor. Anyone can take a spin class regardless of your fitness level by simply adjusting your pace, or the tension of the bike.
